“Nairobi” comes from Masai phrase enkare nyorobi (enkare Nairobi) which means or rather translates to cool water

Nairobi was founded in 1899 by colonial authorities in British East Africa as a rail depot to Uganda railway

Nairobi railway camp which later became the railway headquarters in Kenya was chosen by the colonial authorities for its central position between Mombasa and Kampala.
